Following President Xiomara Castro’s decision to switch diplomatic recognition from Taiwan to China for economic benefits, a senior Honduran official announced on Monday that Taiwan must vacate its embassy in Honduras within 30 days.
Deputy Foreign Minister Antonio Garcia stated on local television that an “orderly, friendly” exit was expected, and that Honduras needed a diplomatic mission to explore China’s potential investments, which could amount to $10 billion.
Meanwhile, the conservative opposition party announced its plan to restore ties with Taiwan if it regained power. The decision leaves Taiwan with only 13 formal allies, mostly in Central America, the Caribbean, and the Pacific.
