Honduras’ President Castro to visit China after ending ties with Taiwan

According to a tweet from the Honduran foreign ministry on Wednesday, President Xiomara Castro will travel to China “soon.” However, no specific date for the trip was given.

This announcement comes shortly after China established diplomatic relations with Honduras, following the Central American country’s decision to sever its long-standing ties with Taiwan.

Last week, Honduras’ foreign minister visited China, shortly after President Castro tweeted about her government’s intention to establish relations with Beijing. Taiwan, which now has diplomatic ties with only 13 countries, accused Honduras of demanding excessive amounts before ending the relationship.

The shift in diplomacy has brought China’s expanding presence in Latin America back into focus.
