During her tour of Africa, U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris announced plans to strengthen economic ties with Tanzania and boost investment in the country.
She met with President Samia Suluhu Hassan in Tanzania’s commercial capital, Dar es Salaam, and discussed a range of initiatives, including a memorandum of understanding between the Export-Import Bank of the United States and the Tanzanian government, which will facilitate up to $500 million in financing to help U.S. companies export goods and services to Tanzania.
Other initiatives include a new partnership in 5G technology and cybersecurity and a U.S.-supported plan to open a new processing plant in Tanzania for minerals that go into electric vehicle batteries. The visit comes as China and Russia are increasing their influence in Africa through investment and trade.
President Hassan has reversed many of the policies of her predecessor, who had been criticized for human rights violations and isolationism. Harris is the latest high-profile U.S. figure to visit African countries in recent months, and she will depart for Zambia on Friday, the final stop on her tour.
