Lesotho’s lawmakers are currently debating a motion to reclaim large portions of South African land that were taken by Dutch settlers in the 19th century.
If passed, the motion proposes that Lesotho should reclaim the entirety of the Free State province and parts of four other provinces bordering the landlocked state.
However, even if the motion passes, it is unlikely that South Africa will cede the land, as doing so would violate an agreement between African countries to respect colonial borders.
The motion is not particularly popular among the inhabitants of Lesotho, who are more focused on economic issues, and it does not appear to have majority support in parliament.
