According to the ship’s owner who spoke to Reuters, the French navy provided escort to a tanker in the Gulf of Guinea on Friday, after pirates left the vessel and abducted some of its crew.
The Monjasa Reformer, a Liberian-flagged tanker carrying oil and chemicals and manned by 16 crew members, was hijacked by five armed attackers last weekend, approximately 140 miles off the coast of Port Pointe-Noire in the Republic of Congo.
The pirates departed the ship on Thursday night but took some of the crew members with them. Monjasa, the Danish shipping firm that owns the vessel, confirmed this on Friday.
