Nihal Saad, chief of cabinet and spokesperson for the United Nations Alliance of Civilisations (UNAOC), has been appointed as the alliance’s director, announced Under-Secretary-General and High-Representative for the UNAOC, Miguel Ángel Moratinos, on Tuesday. The recruitment process, which began in February 2022, concluded after an extensive and highly competitive selection process, Moratinos stated.

Ms. Saad brings a wealth of knowledge and experience in the field of interreligious and intercultural dialogue, conflict prevention, conflict resolution, and interfaith-related issues, covering a wide range of faiths and cultures, according to the under-secretary-general. Her unwavering commitment to the principles and values that underpin the work of the organization make her the perfect choice for this new leadership role, Moratinos added.

Saad has also been highly active and contributed significantly to global counter-terrorism strategies, combatting racism and discrimination based on religion or belief, including Islamophobia, antisemitism, and Christianophobia, Moratinos pointed out. Her exceptional communication skills and extensive experience are highly valued, and Moratinos expressed full confidence in her ability to lead the organization, considering the broader responsibilities and mandate of her new position.

One of Saad’s notable assets is her remarkable institutional memory, which proved to be invaluable during the successive transitions within UNAOC, confirmed Moratinos. Prior to her current position, Saad served as the spokesperson for the 66th president of the UN General Assembly and as the head of the Press & Information Bureau at the Permanent Mission of Egypt to the UN. She also holds the position of head of the Organizing Committee of UNAOC Forums.

With over 22 years of experience in journalism, including as a senior political correspondent and host on Egyptian TV, Saad brings a diverse skill set to her new role. She holds a master’s degree in TV journalism from the American University in Cairo and a diploma in linguistics from Ain Shams University in Cairo. Saad has also moderated several panel discussions in international and regional meetings and has appeared on various TV shows as a commentator on foreign affairs.

As the newly appointed director of UNAOC, Saad is expected to provide strategic leadership, promote intercultural understanding, and foster dialogue among different cultures, religions, and communities to build inclusive societies and promote sustainable development worldwide. Her extensive experience and deep commitment to the principles of the UNAOC are anticipated to bring a fresh perspective and drive to the organization’s mission and initiatives.

The appointment of Nihal Saad as the director of UNAOC marks a significant milestone for the organization, and her leadership is expected to further strengthen its efforts in promoting tolerance, understanding, and cooperation among nations and cultures, contributing to the United Nations’ overall mission of fostering peace, security, and sustainable development worldwide.
