New York, July 15, 2023 – The Basotho community in New York came together in a splendid display of culture and tradition to celebrate the 60th birthday of His Majesty King Letsie III. The festivities, held at the heart of New York State, were organized under the invitation of the newly appointed Permanent Representative of the Permanent Mission of the Kingdom of Lesotho to the United Nations, His Excellency Mr. Matete ‘Nena.
Clad in their vibrant traditional attire, including the iconic mokorotlo hats, the Basotho community showcased a captivating celebration that captured the attention of onlookers. The event featured mesmerizing ululations, spirited mokhibo dances, and soulful praise songs dedicated to the revered monarch. Adding to the aura of reverence, various Basotho artists presented their artistry through portraits depicting His Majesty.
In his inspiring keynote address to the Basotho Diaspora, Ambassador ‘Nena eloquently narrated the biography of King Letsie III, underscoring the significance of the monarchy in Lesotho. The King’s role as a unifying figure for the nation was emphasized by a representative of the Basotho diaspora in the United States, who wished him a joyous and healthy birthday.
