Lesotho and South Africa have signed a landmark agreement easing travel restrictions between the two nations. The deal, finalized by Home Affairs Ministers from both countries, grants Basotho citizens a significant advantage: visa-free stays in South Africa for up to 90 days, with the possibility of extension to 180 days.
Previously, Basotho visitors were limited to 30-day stays. This new agreement reflects a commitment to fostering closer ties and simplifying travel for law-abiding citizens.
Lesotho’s Home Affairs Minister, Lebona Lephema, emphasized the collaborative spirit behind the agreement. He acknowledged past challenges but stressed the importance of finding solutions that address national security concerns while facilitating movement between the countries.
Minister Lephema addressed concerns raised by South Africa regarding illegal immigration and criminal activity. He assured them that Lesotho is taking steps to prevent its borders from being exploited by third-country nationals. These measures include stricter vetting procedures for departing travelers.
South Africa’s Home Affairs Minister, Aaron Motsoaledi, welcomed the agreement while clarifying its limitations. He explained that the 90-day visa can be extended to a maximum of 180 days under South African law. He also highlighted the commitment to improved border management, stressing the importance of regulating movement alongside fostering economic exchange.
