The Deputy Prime Minister of Lesotho, Honourable Justice Nthomeng Majara, led a delegation to Hubei Province, China, from April 24th to 26th, 2024. Accompanied by the Minister of Health, Honourable Selibe Mochoboroane, and senior officials from the Ministry of Health, the visit aimed to strengthen partnerships and discuss plans for twinning Maseru District Hospital with Wuhan No.1 Hospital.
The focus was on expanding and exchanging medical expertise and training in modern technology equipment usage. Wuhan No.1 Hospital is known for its integrated approach to healthcare, combining traditional and Western medicine to treat various diseases.
During the visit, the delegation toured Hauzhong Agricultural University, discussing technological innovations and modern agricultural systems. At Wuhan United Imaging Healthcare Co. Ltd, they explored advanced medical equipment for early disease detection, particularly cancer and tumors, to enhance healthcare in Lesotho.
A courtesy call was made to Mr. Wang Zhonglin, Governor of Hubei Provincial People’s Government, where the longstanding friendship between China and Lesotho was celebrated. The Governor expressed China’s commitment to deepening practical cooperation, especially in health, infrastructure, and capacity building.
In response, the Deputy Prime Minister reiterated Lesotho’s support for the “One China Policy” and thanked China for its support in various development programs. She highlighted the potential for enhanced cooperation in human resource exchange across multiple sectors, including health, agriculture, communication, science, technology, innovation, and textiles.
The delegation proceeded to Yichang City, where they met with Mr. Ma Zejiang, Mayor of Yichang Municipal People’s Government. Discussions revolved around hydropower generation, with Yichang boasting the world’s largest hydropower plant. The Deputy Prime Minister expressed Lesotho’s interest in learning from Yichang’s experiences to improve agricultural production and health services.
