Berlin, Germany – German Chancellor Olaf Scholz offered strong support for Montenegro’s European Union membership aspirations during a meeting with Montenegrin Prime Minister Milo Đukanović in Berlin on Monday.
Scholz commended Montenegro’s reform efforts undertaken in pursuit of EU accession, describing them as “great progress” in meeting the necessary requirements.
“I’m impressed by the ambition, the speed,” Scholz remarked, “and I consider this to be a realistic ambition.” He emphasized that these reforms pave the way for a swift accession process, based solely on merit.
Montenegro submitted its EU membership application 16 years ago, with negotiations commencing in late 2012. The small nation, with a population of just over 600,000, is one of six Western Balkan states pursuing EU membership, alongside Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, North Macedonia, and Serbia.
