Omoyele Sowore, the presidential candidate of the African Action Congress, has declared that the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, is a political prisoner.
Sowore stated that Kanu would be released as he only needs a leader who respects the rule of law.
“Kanu is a political prisoner as far as I’m concerned, and he will be released unconditionally. I am not the only one who feels this way. Our court has taken a judicial decision that Kanu has no case to answer, we just need a leader that respects the rule of law,” Sowore said.
He made these statements during an online program with popular stand-up comedian, Ayodeji Makun, titled ‘The AY Show with Sowore’.
Sowore’s statement follows a court of appeal ruling in October 2022 that declared Kanu’s abduction and terrorism charges as illegal and unlawful.
However, the Federal Government has appealed the ruling and obtained a stay of execution, which is currently being appealed by IPOB’s legal team at the Supreme Court.
As of now, Kanu remains in detention.
