Bola Tinubu, the flag bearer of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has won his sixth state in the Nigerian presidential election held on February 25, 2023. This time, Tinubu secured victory in Jigawa State in Nigeria’s North-West geopolitical zone, marking his first win in the region.
Tinubu’s win was announced at the national collation center in Abuja on Monday night. He garnered 421,390 votes, while Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) came in second with 386,587 votes. The Labour Party’s (LP) Peter Obi secured 1,889 votes, and Rabiu Kwankwaso of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) received 98,234 votes.
Tinubu had previously won five states, namely Ekiti, Ogun, Kwara, Ondo, and Oyo, but lost his base in Lagos to Peter Obi, a former governor of Anambra State. Obi has won three states so far, including Nasarawa, Enugu, and Lagos. Atiku, on the other hand, has cleared Osun, Katsina, Adamawa, Gombe, and Yobe.
However, according to Section 134 of the Nigerian Constitution, a presidential candidate must have the majority of votes cast at the election and must secure not less than one-quarter of the votes cast at the election in at least two-thirds of all the States in the Federation and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja. If no candidate satisfies these conditions, a second election will be held, as stated in Sub-section 3 of the same section.
