The Presidency has emphasized that the results of the February 25 Presidential and National Assembly elections remain valid unless proven otherwise in court, despite allegations of irregularities and criticism of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, stated this in a report on the President’s recent trip to Doha, Qatar, where he attended the United Nations summit on Least Developed Countries.

The Presidency also dismissed any possibility of annulling the presidential elections, as was done in June 1993, and urged the opposition candidates to seek redress in court.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Labour Party had called for the cancellation of the election, citing irregularities, but the electoral umpire proceeded with the collation exercise, culminating in Bola Tinubu, the All Progressives Congress Presidential candidate, emerging as the President-elect.

The governing APC and the opposition PDP and LP have since constituted their legal teams to battle in court.

The Presidency maintained that President Buhari did not criticize INEC because he had decided not to take any decisions that would undermine the electoral process.
