Chief Nyesom Wike, the Governor of Rivers State, has clarified that Peter Obi, the Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party, left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) because some politicians within the party wanted power to remain in the north.
Wike insisted that he did not work against Obi in the presidential election held on February 25, 2023. He expressed his satisfaction that power has shifted to the south.
Wike made these statements on Thursday while receiving the National Executive Committee of Ohanaeze Ndi Igbo Worldwide during a courtesy visit to the Government House in Port Harcourt, as stated by Kelvin Ebiri, the governor’s media assistant.
Wike emphasized that he had been a strong advocate for a southern president and that Obi left the PDP when Sule Lamido told him that power would remain in the north in 2023. Wike claimed that he had supported Obi by providing him with logistics such as vehicles, paying for the stadium and providing support, but other individuals applied and he rejected their requests.
Wike alleged that some people sabotaged him at the convention ground when he was poised to win. He insisted that if the PDP had taken the presidential candidate, they could not take the chairmanship, and he called on them to return the chairmanship.
Dr. Peter Anele, the Deputy National Legal Adviser of Ohanaeze Ndi Igbo Worldwide, stated that the Igbos had been vying for the presidency of Nigeria for a long time and saw the previous presidential election as an opportunity to win it.
