The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has issued an ultimatum to the Federal Government, giving them seven days to address the ongoing currency shortage and fuel scarcity in certain areas of the country.
Failure to do so will result in a nationwide industrial action, according to NLC President Joe Ajero, who announced the strike notice following the Congress’s central working committee meeting on Monday.
Ajero expressed concern over the hardships faced by Nigerian workers due to the Federal Government’s naira redesign policy and the lingering fuel shortage in some regions. The union has been pushed to the brink, he added.
“The Congress wants to notify the Federal Government that we can no longer remain silent on the persistent issue of fuel scarcity and arbitrary price hikes on petroleum products,” Ajero said.
“The NLC is giving the Federal Government of Nigeria, government agencies such as the Central Bank of Nigeria, and other banking institutions seven working days to address the cash crunch. If they do not do so by the end of the seven-day period, the Congress will instruct all workers in the country to stay at home because it has become extremely difficult to obtain N1 to commute to our places of work.”
