Obasanjo appeals for mercy in Ekweremadu case

In regards to the upcoming May 5th sentencing of Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu and his wife Beatrice, who were convicted of organ trafficking after a six-week trial at the Central Criminal Court of England, former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo has written a private letter to the Chief Clerk of the court advocating for leniency.

While acknowledging the unpleasant and condemnable nature of their actions, Obasanjo expressed his desire for the court to consider the couple’s good character, parental instincts, and ill daughter when determining their punishment.

He also emphasized the warm relationship between the UK and Nigeria and Ekweremadu’s position as a distinguished Senator in the Nigerian Parliament. Obasanjo hopes that the couple has learned from their experience and will continue to be outstanding members of their community. It was confirmed that the letter was not intended for public consumption.

Ekweremadu, his wife, and their doctor were found guilty of facilitating the travel of a young man to Britain for organ exploitation, while Ekweremadu’s daughter was cleared by the court.

The first time I'm loving Obasanjo's letter…….. May God help DSP Ekweremadu🙏🙏🙏 pic.twitter.com/64d1A2eXwY
