Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, a renowned author, has criticized the United States for its message of congratulations to President-elect Bola Tinubu following his victory in the February 25th Nigerian presidential election.
The US State Department had commended Nigeria for the election and called for calm amid accusations of voter fraud and technical glitches. However, Adichie argued that the process was flawed due to deliberate manipulation and expressed bewilderment that the US referred to it as a “competitive election” that represents a new era for Nigerian democracy.
She raised concerns about a growing discontent and tension among young people and called on President Joe Biden not to personally endorse the “unlawful process”.
Adichie contended that by congratulating Tinubu, the US tarnished its commitment to democracy and should not give legitimacy to an illegitimate process.
