Nollywood icon Sola Sobowale has set the record straight on rumors that plagued her career, including drug trafficking allegations and even death hoaxes.
Speaking on the Teju Baby Face ‘King of Talk’ podcast, Sobowale revealed the toll these false narratives took on her. While she acknowledges the challenges of menial jobs during her time in the UK supporting her family, the drug trafficking claims were particularly upsetting.
“They said I was arrested in Saudi Arabia, that I carried cocaine,” Sobowale recounted. “They even said they amputated my leg and hand!”
These outlandish rumors even included her supposed demise. “People were surprised to see me back in Nigeria,” she said, questioning if some believed in “voodoo.”
Sobowale also addressed rumors about her working as a restaurant cleaner or cook in the UK. She clarified that the restaurant belonged to her sister, and she simply helped out occasionally.
“Before I left Nigeria, I had my own restaurant,” Sobowale emphasized. “There’s no shame in any kind of honest work.”
Despite the negativity, Sobowale has enjoyed a successful career spanning over four decades. From her early days in “The Village Headmaster” to her recent role in the critically acclaimed “King of Boys,” she’s remained a powerhouse in the Nigerian film industry.
