Lagos, Nigeria – Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has announced that the state will pay its civil servants a minimum wage of N85,000, effective immediately. This is significantly higher than the national minimum wage of N70,000 recently signed into law by President Bola Tinubu.
In an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Sanwo-Olu emphasized that Lagos has the capacity to pay a higher minimum wage due to its economic strength. He clarified that the decision was not driven by a desire to outdo other states but rather a commitment to ensuring that Lagos residents receive a living wage.
The governor further expressed his intention to increase the state’s minimum wage to N100,000 by January 2025. This would demonstrate the government’s ongoing efforts to improve the welfare of its employees.
While several states in Nigeria have begun implementing the revised minimum wage, Lagos has taken a proactive step by announcing a higher rate. This move is expected to have a positive impact on the lives of civil servants in the state and contribute to its overall economic development.
