Lagos, Nigeria – Legal action has been taken by residents of Mafoluku, Isolo, and Oshodi in Lagos State against Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company (IKEDC) over alleged estimated billing and prolonged power outages in their communities.
They claim that the company has been charging exorbitant estimated bills while failing to provide an adequate and consistent power supply. As a result, they are seeking a court order to prevent IKEDC from disconnecting their electricity in a lawsuit filed at the Federal High Court in Ikoyi.
According to the plaintiffs, Lawal Ekundayo, Ahmed Olayiwola, Olufemi Dasaolu, and Chigozie Ike, the estimated bills they receive do not reflect their actual electricity consumption. They allege that IKEDC has been arbitrarily assigning them to higher electricity tariff bands without their consent, resulting in inflated charges.
Ekundayo told reporters that the residents have been subjected to frequent power outages, despite being charged for consistent electricity supply. He also accused IKEDC of manipulating prepaid meters to control electricity usage and generate additional revenue.
Olayiwola said that the residents are determined to fight for their rights and ensure that IKEDC is held accountable for its actions. He added that this is not the first time the communities have taken legal action against the electricity company over similar issues.
A spokesperson for IKEDC could not be reached for comment at the time of this report.
