Lagos, Nigeria – In the Iponri Housing Estate, Surulere, the Lagos State Government has given residents of 15 structurally compromised buildings a two-week final notice to vacate the premises due to safety concerns.
Warning that the buildings pose a significant safety risk if not demolished promptly, the General Manager of the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA), Arc. Gbolahan Oki, issued the evacuation order on Saturday.
Based on multiple inspections and repeated warnings issued over time, Oki explained that the decision to evacuate the residents was made. He stressed the urgent need for action to ensure public safety.
The 15 buildings, located in the Iponri Housing Estate, are two-story blocks of residential flats. Photos released by LASBCA show the visibly distressed state of the structures.
The agency urged residents to adhere to building codes and safety regulations to prevent future incidents. In its statement, LASBCA reaffirmed its commitment to monitoring and addressing distressed buildings across the state.
This is not the first time LASBCA has taken action to prevent building collapses in Lagos. In recent weeks, the agency has evacuated residents from several other distressed buildings in the state, including one in Gbagada and another in Isale Eko.
The government’s proactive approach to building safety is aimed at reducing the risk of casualties and property damage.
