Lagos, Nigeria – The Lagos State Government has formed a strategic partnership with the United Kingdom in a significant move to combat the rising tide of illegal gambling. This collaboration, formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), aims to enhance cross-border enforcement of gaming and lottery regulations, reinforcing efforts to address these issues both locally and internationally.

As internet use in Nigeria continues to grow rapidly, so does the number of online gambling platforms, many of which operate without proper regulation. The agreement, signed at the well-known International Association of Gaming Regulators (IAGR) and International Masters of Gaming Law (IMGL) conference in Rome, Italy, highlights the increasing concerns about illegal activities in the gaming industry.

Bashir Are, CEO of the Lagos State Lotteries and Gaming Authority (LSLGA), emphasized the urgency of addressing this issue: “Illegal online gambling is a global problem, generating billions of dollars annually in unregulated markets.” He highlighted the need for international cooperation to curb these activities and protect consumers.

The partnership between Lagos and the UK will facilitate knowledge sharing, resource exchange, and joint enforcement efforts. By leveraging the UK’s robust regulatory framework, Lagos aims to enhance its own oversight capabilities and close regulatory gaps.

This collaboration is expected to have a profound impact on the Nigerian gaming industry. It will not only deter illegal operators but also attract legitimate investment, fostering a more transparent and responsible gaming environment. As Lagos positions itself as a gaming hub in Africa, this partnership signals a commitment to upholding the highest standards of regulation and consumer protection.
