Agege, Lagos – The event, held at Oyewole Primary School in Agege, was an opportunity for Miss Aminat Alege, a student who suffered an eye injury from a stray teargas canister fired by a police officer, to receive assistance from the Lagos State House of Assembly on February 9.
A cheque of N5 million was presented to the victim’s parents by The Speaker of the House, Mr. Mudashiru Obasa, on Friday, in honor of his birthday, November 11. The donation was a collective effort by the Assembly members to alleviate the financial burden on the family, particularly in light of the potential educational challenges the incident might pose.
“We were deeply disturbed by what happened to Aminat, a student of Adams Yakubu Memorial School in Agege,” Obasa said. “After seeing her parents’ public appeal for help, we decided to step in and offer assistance.” In addition to the financial aid, the Assembly has pledged to provide a scholarship to ensure Aminat can continue her education uninterrupted.
The Speaker’s birthday celebration was not solely focused on the donation. It also included a reward ceremony for bright students from across Lagos State’s 20 local government areas and six education districts.
Obasa use the opportunity to inspire the young minds. He emphasized the importance of hard work, dedication, and dreaming big, drawing from his own experiences as a former student of the school.
“I never imagined I would be where I am today,” Obasa shared. “You too can achieve great things. It doesn’t matter where you go to school, but how hard you work.”
He urged the students to prioritize their education, stating the significance of early preparation. Obasa recalled finishing his West African Examinations Council (WAEC) preparations while still in class three.
Mrs. Oladele Adekanye, the Tutor-General of Education, expressed gratitude to the Speaker for his continuous support of education in the state. She assured him that the students would strive to make Lagos proud. And also Master Obaloluwa Akilla, a student representative, praised Obasa for his significant contributions to the development of Agege, particularly in infrastructure.
