Lagos, Nigeria – A series of tragic road accidents claimed three lives and injured several others in Lagos State on Monday. The incidents, primarily attributed to brake failure, emphasize the urgent need for improved road safety measures.
The most severe accident occurred in Epe, where a runaway Dangote truck, identified as DCG-TM-028, careened down a steep slope from Ita-Opo. The out-of-control vehicle first collided with a tricycle, AGL 442 QC, and a stationary Toyota Camry before crashing into the Ayetoro Market Complex. Tragically, the tricycle driver and two students from Manpower Technical School lost their lives in the devastating impact.
Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, confirmed the incident and revealed that emergency responders from LASTMA and the Federal Road Safety Corps swiftly arrived at the scene to secure the area and provide immediate assistance to the injured. The victims were subsequently transported to the morgue at Epe General Hospital.
In yet another alarming event, a collision between an LT bus (FKJ 762 AD) and a Toyota Hiace bus (MUS 154 YE) near Ijaye, inward Abule-Egba, resulted in injuries to the driver and two passengers. The accident was also caused by brake failure, focus on the recurring theme of inadequate vehicle maintenance.
A third accident involving multiple vehicles, including two Volkswagen commercial buses (LSD 483 CT & AGL 267) and a 10-tyre DAF truck, took place at Tsunami Bridge, inward Ketu. Fortunately, no fatalities were reported, but several individuals sustained injuries and were promptly rushed to the hospital for medical treatment.
