Lagos State is taking a groundbreaking step toward becoming a leader in artificial intelligence (AI) by developing a regulatory framework that will guide the responsible growth and use of AI technologies within the state. The new regulations, announced by Olatubosun Alake, the Commissioner for Innovation, Science, and Technology, aim to create a transparent and secure environment for AI applications while positioning Lagos at the forefront of Africa’s technological revolution.
The development of these regulations is being carried out in partnership with the Federal AI Collective, and the framework is expected to be finalized by the first or second quarter of 2025. Alake explained that the state’s efforts to integrate AI into its infrastructure are part of a broader vision to embed cutting-edge technology into everyday life, with a focus on deploying AI responsibly and ethically.
“This initiative will set a clear direction for AI implementation across Lagos and provide a foundation for harmonizing our digital assets to support AI-driven innovations,” Alake noted. The regulations aim to guide not just the development of AI, but also its seamless integration with existing digital infrastructure to ensure effective and ethical usage across various sectors.
In addition to establishing robust regulatory policies, Lagos State is making significant investments in AI research and development. The Science Research and Innovation Council is channeling funds into local academic institutions such as the University of Lagos and Lagos State University. These resources will be directed toward advancing AI technologies, blockchain development, and other emerging fields, with the goal of fostering an ecosystem that nurtures both innovation and the talent required to drive future technological breakthroughs.
Meanwhile, the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) is spearheading the creation of a National AI Strategy. This strategy is being crafted with the help of both local and international experts, and it aims to address key issues such as data security, transparency, and trust in AI systems. Through this effort, NITDA hopes to establish a comprehensive and unified approach to AI governance, ensuring that these technologies are implemented in a way that benefits all Nigerians.
