Lagos, Nigeria – The Lagos State government has rolled out an extensive road safety education program aimed at fostering responsible traffic behavior among students and teachers across public and private schools. This initiative targets primary and secondary schools and seeks to cultivate a culture of safety within the state’s educational system while addressing longstanding issues of traffic-related hazards.
Sola Giwa, the Special Adviser to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Transportation, explained that inadequate traffic knowledge and reckless road habits have significantly contributed to the state’s traffic congestion and road safety challenges. According to Giwa, the program focuses on early education as a strategy to instill good habits and promote responsible behavior on Lagos’ bustling roads.
Giwa remarked, “Children and young people are an integral part of our road network, navigating it as pedestrians, passengers, and sometimes motorbike riders. This makes Traffic Safety Education a top priority for the state government.”
The initiative aims to equip students with critical traffic knowledge and safety skills. Participants will be educated on road usage rules, the importance of traffic signs, and safe practices while traveling. The curriculum emphasizes values like patience, alertness, and respect for road laws, fostering a generation of responsible drivers, passengers, and pedestrians.
