Badagry, Lagos – Empowerment of women in rural and underserved communities has taken center stage in Lagos State as the government drives a transformative initiative focused on financial literacy and inclusion. Through partnerships with organizations like LASRRA, NIMC, Pay Business (Opay), and Cowrywise, the state aims to provide women with the skills and resources needed to effectively manage their finances and gain access to modern financial services.
One of the most recent efforts took place in Araromi-Ale, a rural community in Badagry, where women gathered for a training program designed to promote human capital development. This initiative is set to extend to women in 12 Local Government Areas and Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) across Lagos State, demonstrating the administration’s commitment to fostering sustainable growth.
Dr. Oreoluwa Finnih-Awokoya, Special Adviser to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), stressed that many women in rural areas remain reliant on outdated savings methods that expose them to risks and limit their economic potential. The program introduces these women to contemporary saving strategies, investment opportunities, and digital financial tools, enabling them to improve their economic standing and contribute more effectively to their households and communities.
Through this training, participants learn to harness financial services that can increase household income, promote better health outcomes, and open doors to improved educational opportunities for their children. These lessons are a significant step toward reducing poverty and empowering women to take control of their financial futures.
Community leaders have also voiced their support for the initiative. Chief Temitope Adele Agemo, the Baale of Araromi-Ale, expressed deep appreciation for the government’s effort, emphasizing its transformative potential. He encouraged the state to continue bringing such impactful programs to rural areas, where they are sorely needed.
Participants in the program, including women like Mrs. Tolani Fashola, Mrs. Ihioma Uchanna, and Mrs. Hephzibah Linus, spoke about the positive impact the training had on their understanding of financial management. They shared how the practical lessons would help them build secure and sustainable financial practices, offering hope for better futures.
