Apapa, Lagos – Marine Bridge in Lagos will be closed to traffic for essential repairs from Wednesday, December 4, 2024, until Tuesday, February 25, 2025. This closure is part of the Federal Ministry of Works’ ongoing efforts to rehabilitate the bridge’s asphalt pavement, which requires critical maintenance.
Oluwaseun Osiyemi, the Commissioner for Transportation in Lagos, made the announcement on Sunday, urging commuters to prepare for potential disruptions and plan their travel accordingly. He explained that the repair work, while necessary for the long-term functionality of the bridge, would result in temporary traffic diversions to ensure smooth flow on alternate routes.
To alleviate the expected congestion during the closure, a well-planned traffic diversion strategy has been put in place. Motorists traveling from Apapa to Lagos Island will be able to choose between two primary routes. The first option will direct drivers to proceed from Apapa to the Costain Roundabout, where they can connect to the Eko Bridge, which will take them into Lagos Island. The second alternative involves using the Ijora 7Up interchange, where drivers can access the ramp to Ijora Causeway Access Road via Ijora Oloye and then proceed to the Eko Bridge to continue their journey to the island.
For those heading from Apapa to Ijora Causeway or Iddo, two routes are available. The first option follows the Costain Roundabout and links to the Eko Bridge before reaching Ijora Causeway, allowing drivers to take the U-turn toward Iddo. Alternatively, motorists can use the Ijora 7Up interchange, head through Ijora Oloye, and connect to Iddo via the Ijora Causeway.
The flow of traffic from Costain Roundabout inbound to Apapa will remain unaffected during the bridge closure period. This measure should help ease congestion for those traveling in the opposite direction.
The state government is asking all road users to cooperate with the traffic management plan and exercise patience during this period of repair work. By adhering to the designated routes and following traffic regulations, commuters can minimize delays and contribute to maintaining a steady traffic flow while repairs are underway.
