Thousands of Nigerians have benefited from an extraordinary free bus service provided by the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), which incurred expenses exceeding ₦73 million in just seven weeks. This initiative, aimed at reducing the soaring cost of transportation, operated across major routes in Lagos and Ogun states, offering both financial relief and community support.
Pastor Leke Adeboye, Youth Province One Pastor-in-Charge, disclosed the figures on Saturday, describing the initiative as a response to the mounting economic pressures faced by Nigerians. “We operated ten buses on a tight schedule, completing two trips daily, five days a week,” he explained. “The fuel cost alone exceeded ₦63 million, and we allocated an additional ₦10 million for the welfare of drivers and volunteers who dedicated their time to this cause.”
Over the seven-week period, approximately 56,000 passengers utilized the free service, enjoying significant savings. Each bus, designed to accommodate 80 passengers per trip, served high-demand routes such as 7UP, Victoria Island, FESTAC, CMS, Ikorodu, and Mowe. “On average, commuters saved roughly ₦40,000 weekly,” Pastor Adeboye noted. “This initiative has provided critical support during an economically challenging time.”
The program, launched in September, extended beyond religious affiliations, welcoming a diverse range of beneficiaries, including students, traders, military personnel, and informal workers. Testimonials from commuters revealed how the service reduced financial burdens while fostering connections and camaraderie among passengers.
The initiative also carried a spiritual element. Volunteers onboard shared inspirational messages from Open Heavens, the RCCG’s daily devotional, combining physical assistance with spiritual encouragement. This unique approach showcased the church’s dedication to holistic community service.
Careful route planning ensured accessibility, linking key points in Ogun State, such as Mowe, Ibafo, Berger, and 7UP, to central hubs in Lagos, including CMS and Victoria Island. The initiative’s strategic design enabled thousands to rely on the buses for their daily commutes, offering a reliable alternative to costly transportation options.
Pastor Adeboye expressed gratitude to all who made the program possible. “This achievement reflects the collective efforts of drivers, volunteers, and our church community, all united by a common goal to serve,” he said.
