Urban development in Lagos is set to undergo a transformative shift with the introduction of a new Building Code slated for implementation in 2025. This forward-looking framework is designed to establish robust construction standards throughout the state, aligning with the government’s vision of making Lagos a sustainable and globally recognized Smart City.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, speaking at the Lagos State Executive Council Retreat on the Domestication of the Lagos Building Code in Ikeja GRA, outlined the transformative potential of the initiative. He stressed the need for cohesive collaboration among various ministries within the built environment sector to ensure the project’s success. “This is not just a revision of outdated regulations,” Governor Sanwo-Olu stated. “We are crafting a building code that aligns with the unique identity and aspirations of Lagos State, guiding construction practices, land use, and materials to enhance safety, health, and overall quality of life for all residents.”
The Governor also spoke about the necessity of preparing Lagos to address future challenges. He noted that the new code is crafted to fortify the state’s infrastructure against potential disruptions, aiming to place Lagos at the forefront of sustainable urban development globally.
Dr. Olajide Babatunde, the Special Adviser to the Governor on eGIS and Urban Development, detailed the comprehensive scope of the project. He explained that the Building Code will address essential aspects such as land use planning, environmental sustainability, and construction management. “This initiative has been a collaborative effort, engaging a wide range of stakeholders from professional bodies to community groups, ensuring that the code reflects the diverse needs of Lagosians,” Dr. Babatunde remarked.
According to Engr. Olufemi Daramola, Special Adviser to the Governor on Infrastructure, the Building Code represents a crucial step toward realizing the vision of a “Green Lagos.” He conveyed confidence that this initiative would allow the state to plan and implement construction projects with both precision and sustainability, leading to infrastructure that is durable and environmentally responsible.
