Eco-friendly transportation has been ushered into the University of Lagos (UNILAG) with the introduction of a fleet of solar-powered and electric buses. Unveiled on Monday, December 16th, 2024, this initiative aims to reduce carbon emissions across the campus and further solidify UNILAG’s commitment to sustainable practices.
The launch of the electric and solar-powered buses also coincided with the introduction of an updated university logo, symbolizing a modern and forward-thinking image for the prestigious institution.
During the unveiling ceremony, Prof. Folasade Ogunsola, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Lagos, led the presentation at a media event held in Lagos. She expressed gratitude to Ogata Global Resources and Chart Eco Global Services, two companies owned by accomplished UNILAG alumni, for donating the eco-friendly buses.
Prof. Ogunsola spoke about the potential impact of these buses on campus life, noting their role in transforming transportation into a more sustainable endeavor. She pointed out that the vehicles, powered by solar energy and electricity, will reduce pollution levels on campus by lowering air emissions.
She addressed the ongoing challenge of maintaining a clean environment, acknowledging that vehicle emissions remain a significant contributor to campus pollution. By incorporating these zero-emission buses into daily transport operations, UNILAG aims to reduce its environmental footprint and improve overall air quality across the campus.
The Vice-Chancellor also introduced the new logo, saying the previous design no longer captured the dynamic and modern essence of UNILAG. The redesigned logo is intended to reflect the university’s commitment to progress, innovation, and its aspirations to remain a leader in academic and technological development.
Mr. Itunu Okusami, the Consultant-in-Chief of Chart Eco Global Services, expressed his enthusiasm for contributing to UNILAG’s sustainability efforts. He praised the university’s commitment to technological advancement and highlighted how this project offers valuable work-study opportunities for students.
Mr. Henry Eke, the Chairman of Ogata Global Resources, shared similar sentiments, expressing pride in supporting his alma mater. He described the donation of the fully electric buses as a commitment to introducing cutting-edge transportation solutions that align with global trends in sustainable transportation.
