Reports suggesting that an Awaiting Trial Person, Ayomide Adeleye, has escaped from custody are untrue, the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) confirmed on Monday. The Service stated that Adeleye, 23, remains in detention at the Maximum Security Custodial Centre, Kirikiri, Lagos.
According to the NCoS, Adeleye, who bears Custody Number S-1995/24, has been in lawful detention since September 26, 2024, after being remanded by Magistrate Court 13A, Ogba, Lagos. He is facing charges of kidnapping and murder.
The confusion reportedly stems from a case involving another inmate with a similar name, who was discharged from the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Kirikiri, on April 4, 2024, following a court order. That individual had been held on charges of theft.
Condemning the spread of misleading reports, the NCoS described the claims as attempts to tarnish the reputation of the institution. It urged media outlets to seek accurate information from reliable sources before publishing sensitive stories.
Acting Controller General of Corrections, Sylvester Nwakuche, reassured the public of the Service’s commitment to ensuring the safe custody and humane treatment of inmates. He also pointed to ongoing reforms aimed at rehabilitating inmates for reintegration into society.
The Service called on Nigerians to disregard the false claims and trust in its dedication to upholding justice and maintaining the rule of law.
