Four suspects, including a US returnee, are in police custody over the gruesome murder of an Uber driver in Obalende, Lagos. The incident unfolded late on Thursday, January 9, after the suspects reportedly booked a ride from Chevron in Lekki to a secluded area in Obalende.

The suspects, identified as David Segun, 21; Emeka Akwara, 19; Samuel Ariori, 21; and Lukman Ariori, 19, reportedly booked an Uber ride from Chevron in Lekki to Obalende. Upon arriving at a deserted area, the group allegedly robbed the driver and inflicted fatal stab wounds to his neck.

Efforts to steal the vehicle proved unsuccessful, but the swift intervention of vigilant residents led to the immediate capture of two suspects at the crime scene. The other two were apprehended hours later near Chevron. The victim’s body has since been taken to the morgue at Mainland Hospital, Yaba.

Commissioner of Police Ishola Olanrewaju condemned the act, questioning the motive behind the brutal killing. He suggested the vehicle may have been on a hire-purchase arrangement, which further demonstrated the senselessness of the crime.

Investigations are ongoing, with Segun reportedly identified as the mastermind of the attack. Police are expected to file severe charges as they deepen their probe into the case.

The Commissioner also commended the success of intelligence-led operations during the festive season, crediting the approach for ensuring relative peace across Lagos during the holidays.
