Lagos commuters are set to benefit from an improved rail system as six new train sets prepare for delivery from China. The Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) has confirmed that the trains, now ready for shipment, will enhance the Blue and Red Lines, boosting efficiency and reducing travel stress.
These new trains have undergone extensive factory testing to ensure reliability. LAMATA Managing Director Engr. Abimbola Akinajo previously stated that additional rolling stock would arrive in 2025 to meet growing commuter demands.
The enhanced capacity is expected to transform both lines. The Blue Line, which runs 72 daily electric trips between Marina and Mile 2, and the diesel-powered Red Line will both benefit from increased frequency and reliability.
The state’s rail infrastructure has been expanding rapidly. The Blue Line, operational since September 2023, is on track to extend to Okokomaiko by 2027. The Red Line launched its initial phase in October 2024, covering 27 kilometers from Agbado to Oyingbo, with further expansion underway.
The Green Line project, another ambitious undertaking, will span 68 kilometers, connecting the Lekki Free Zone to Marina. Recently formalized during the 2024 China-Africa Cooperation Summit, this project enjoys federal funding support of ₦146.14 billion and a partnership with China Harbour Engineering Company.
