Lagos, Nigeria – A wave of panic swept through Murtala Muhammed Airport in Lagos on Friday morning as a US-bound aircraft carrying 256 passengers and crew members was compelled to make an emergency return due to a developing technical fault.
The incident, which unfolded around 1:20 am, saw the aircraft, en route to Washington Dulles International Airport, abruptly turn back after approximately four hours in the air. While all passengers and crew members were successfully evacuated, 38 individuals sustained injuries, including four passengers and two crew members with serious injuries.
Obiageli Orah, the spokesperson for the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), confirmed the incident, stating that the Aerodrome Rescue and Fire Fighting Services, Aviation Medical, and Aviation Security teams were immediately dispatched upon receiving the distress call.
The rescue teams were on standby within four minutes of the pilot’s distress signal, Orah said. “The aircraft landed safely at Delta 31 gate at 3:37 am. While all individuals disembarked without further incident, a significant number of passengers and crew members suffered injuries. Those with minor injuries received immediate medical attention at the airport clinic, while those with serious injuries were promptly transported to Duchess Hospital in Ikeja for further treatment.”
FAAN officials emphasized that the aircraft itself did not sustain any major damage. Passengers without injuries were provided with accommodation at nearby hotels.
FAAN has assured the public that it will continue to prioritize the safety and well-being of all passengers and crew members, and that further updates regarding the incident will be made available as necessary.
