LAGOS – The Bus Reform Initiative (BRI) scheme in Lagos State will implement an 18 percent fare increase for commuters starting February 17, 2025. The fare revision, disclosed by the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) on its social media platforms Thursday, is attributed to rising operational costs as the main reason for the increase.
This latest hike comes after a previous N100 across-the-board increase on all Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) routes, implemented on June 30, 2022. At that time, LAMATA attributed the rise to soaring diesel prices and a significant number of buses grounded due to a scarcity of spare parts. This new 18% increase is on top of that previous rise.
LAMATA’s official statement acknowledged the burden this places on Lagos residents but insisted that the fare review is crucial for the continued operation of bus services throughout the state. “The fare rise is because of the increase in the cost of operations and the need to ensure that buses keep running and guarantee your movement around Lagos,” the statement read. “We seek your understanding and cooperation.”
While the exact breakdown of the new fares across different routes has yet to be released by LAMATA, the percentage increase suggests a substantial impact on daily commutes for millions of Lagosians. The announcement has already begun circulating amongst the populace, with many expressing concern about the added financial strain.
