Lagos, Nigeria – Onion prices in Lagos State have surged nearly 50% in the past three months, with a bag now costing N180,000, up from N90,000 to N120,000. This sharp increase is troubling for residents and traders alike, as onions are currently out of season, leading to a scarcity. People are have difficulty sourcing onions from northern Nigeria, and rising transportation costs further contribute to the high prices. As a result, many consumers are buying less or substituting onions with other seasonings in their meals.
Traders and consumers alike have expressed frustration over the sudden cost increase. The scarcity of onions, particularly during the off-season, is being cited as the primary cause. Rabiu Aliu, an onion trader in Alimosho, explained that supply constraints from the North, coupled with financial challenges faced by traders, have contributed to the soaring prices.
Judith Amen, a resident of Amuwo Odofin, noted the unpredictability of onion prices, point out that even small onions are now being sold for exorbitant prices, ranging from N200 to N250. Abu Ishaku from Agege echoed these sentiments, attributing the price surge to both scarcity and rising transportation costs.
Consumers are adopting various strategies to cope with the increased cost of onions. Rejoice Michael has reduced her onion consumption, while Sandra Obalelenge expressed surprise at the steep price hike during the off-season. Wendy Dada revealed that some residents are resorting to using alternative seasonings to compensate for the high cost of onions.
As the onion crisis continues to unfold, it remains to be seen how long these high prices will persist and what impact they will have on the overall cost of living in Lagos State.
