CCTV cameras will now be a mandatory installation for all buildings exceeding six floors in Lagos State, according to a new directive issued by the state government. The policy, which also extends to commercial buildings, aims to bolster security and public safety across the region.
According to Dr. Oluyinka Olumide, Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, the policy applies to buildings along major roads as well as all commercial structures in the state. Property owners will now be mandated to include CCTV systems as a condition for obtaining Planning Permits.
“This measure will apply to all buildings of six floors or more, both existing and under construction, in Lagos State. Additionally, commercial buildings will be required to install CCTV cameras to obtain necessary approvals for their construction,” Dr. Olumide stated.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu approved the policy as part of efforts to enhance public safety and integrate security measures into the state’s urban development plans. The policy aligns with the state’s broader goals of improving safety and creating a more secure environment for residents and businesses.
The Lagos State Physical Planning Permit Authority (LASPPPA) will be responsible for implementing the new regulations. To ensure compliance, LASPPPA will provide standardized specifications for CCTV systems, conduct inspections, and enforce regular maintenance. Property owners will also be required to grant state security agencies access to surveillance footage when requested.
