Efforts to drive economic growth and self-reliance in Lagos received a significant boost with the provision of essential tools, equipment, and financial grants to 1,500 aspiring entrepreneurs. This initiative was unveiled at the Micro Enterprise Support Initiative (MESI), a strategic project led by the Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation (WAPA). The MESI program aims to promote economic sustainability and unlock the entrepreneurial potential of Lagos residents.
During the gathering, the importance of self-reliance and economic empowerment in building a robust and prosperous Lagos was a key focus. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the Governor of Lagos State, stated that empowering Lagosians from all backgrounds is a fundamental goal in the state’s vision for substantial economic progress. He also noted that the success of the first phase of the MESI initiative has reinforced the government’s commitment to supporting and nurturing the entrepreneurial spirit within the community.
Governor Sanwo-Olu noted that the initiative has already proven its potential in driving sustainable development and empowering individuals to become self-sufficient. The governor reiterated the administration’s commitment to creating a Lagos where every citizen has a chance at prosperity. Through skills acquisition programs, capacity-building workshops, and financial support initiatives, the government aims to equip Lagosians with the necessary tools and knowledge to achieve economic success.
Mrs. Bolaji Dada, the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, expressed gratitude to Governor Sanwo-Olu for his dedication to empowering women and fostering entrepreneurship. She praised the MESI program as a beacon of hope for aspiring startups across Lagos, stating that it is a testament to the government’s belief in the potential of Lagosians, particularly women, to drive economic progress.
She pointed out that approximately 70 percent of the beneficiaries in this initiative are graduates from WAPA’s various skills acquisition centers. This demonstrates the effectiveness of the government’s efforts in nurturing entrepreneurial talent and providing opportunities that translate into real-world success.
The support provided includes a wide range of tools and equipment, such as sewing machines, hair dryers, cake mixers, and farming implements. These tools are not just assets but instruments for transformation, helping beneficiaries build sustainable businesses and contribute positively to their local communities.
Mrs. Dada strongly encouraged the beneficiaries to seize the opportunity presented by this initiative to innovate, grow, and contribute to their communities. She urged them to embrace resilience, adapt to challenges, and continuously learn from their entrepreneurial experiences.
