Yaba, Lagos – Parents of students at the Federal Science and Technical College (FSTC), Yaba, are up in arms over a sudden hike in the Parents Teachers Association (PTA) fee. The fee, which had been set at the government-approved N5,000, was unilaterally raised to N11,500 by the school’s administration, sparking outrage among the parent body.
The increase, affecting over 5,000 students, amounts to an additional N32.5 million in levies collected from parents. Many are questioning the lack of consultation and transparency surrounding the decision.
This is not the first time the PTA fee has been adjusted without input from parents. Under the previous executive council, the fee was similarly raised to N7,500 before being reverted to N5,000 after backlash. Parents argue that the current administration is repeating past mistakes, disregarding protocols, and sidelining their involvement in critical decisions.
Parents allege that the PTA leadership has used its position to impose additional fees under various pretexts, leading to concerns about mismanagement and lack of accountability. They stress the need for open communication and collective decision-making, particularly on matters directly impacting their financial responsibilities.
Repeated letters addressed to the school principal have reportedly gone unanswered, further fueling tensions.
